twoDotNothing: Twitter

In the last couple of days, people came to me, asking me things about different social networks, how they work and what sense they make. Well and since I decided to write my final thesis about social networks next year, I thought I research a bit and write some facts down for you and for me. So everything thats labeled with twoDotNothing refers to my little Social Network collection. Lets start with my current favorite toy – Twitter.

name: Twitter (http://www.twitter.com)
found: 2006
member: almost 1.000.000 all over the world

sense: Yes! No! Maybe!
Twitter, just to explain it a bit, is about writing what you’re doing/thinking with only 140 chars. Somebody called it Nanoblogging. The interest about that depends 100% on the persons/services that you follow.

Follow yes. To follow somebody means to get ones Twitter updates. It means that you have to choose your Followers very wisely. What makes a good follower? Well, I like those who don’t have too much artificial content. I like the old school twitterers, who type their tweets on their own, who tell people, that they are currently making some nice cookies, watching a good movie, who are telling about their travels or fighting their everyday life’s.

Beside that, you can choose followers, who keep you up to date about any interesting subject. For me thats for example the iPhone twitter service “Leo”. Some other are only temporaily, like the Phoenix mars mission (that I really miss) or the twitter Advendskalender.

You also have the chance to get in touch with your @followers and you may even #tag your posts so they can be found via Twitters huge search tool. All in one – Twitter is a service that gives you constantly a mass information input about people/things all over the world. Just your choice.

getting started: Register on twitter.com for an account. You only need an email-address and a name and a password. Start following some random people to get a feeling for it, find friends maybe or services that you know. Reply by using @name and tag your post with #tag. The rest comes…

useless level: relative
time spent: 2-5 x 5 sec/day (depends)
find me: zucker

api/useful: yes/yes

last advice: Avoid following too many power twitterers. Thats like a wave every day and it kills the fun.
